BAFTA Game Awards Finally Reveal Best Performer and Best Supporting Performer Nominees

BAFTA reveals the final two categories in its list of nominations as it looks to crown some of the best games to come out of 2021.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts or BAFTA The awards are one of the premier award ceremonies in film and television. BAFTA also organizes a game awards ceremony, known as the BAFTA Games Awards. Like many high-profile game awards ceremonies, such as The Game Awards, many gamers turn to the BAFTA Game Awards to see if their favorite game will win gold or to find out what the best games were during a given year.

Although the official nominations were revealed two weeks ago for the BAFTA Game Awards 2022, two categories were surprisingly left blank in the nominees revealed. The Best Performer and Best Supporting Actor awards were only recently revealed, with no reason why the latter two categories took longer. The nominees for Best Performance are Ozioma Akagha as Julianna Blake (Death Loop)Jason E. Kelly as Colt Vahn (Death Loop)Jennifer Hale as Rivet (Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart), John McLaren as Star-Lord (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), Erika Mori as Alex Chen (Life is Strange: True Colors) and Jane Perry as Selene Vassos (Return).

Last year, the BAFTA Game Awards were dominated by the division The last of us part 2 and underworldthe latter winning the award for best game. This year however, the cooperative game It takes two and Return are at the top of the nominations. When it comes to nominations for Best Performer in a Supporting Role, dominating plays are left out entirely, with the shortlisted actors being Laura Bailey as Polina Petrova (Call of Duty: Vanguard), Kimberly Brooks as Hollis Forsythe (Psychonauts 2), Maggie Robertson as Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil: Village), Han Soto as Gabe Chen (Life is Strange: True Colors), Alex Weiner as Rocket and Jason Cavalier as Drax (both in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy).

Interestingly, all of the actors listed above are recognized by BAFTA for their first-time performances except for Laura Bailey, as this nomination ranks her fourth overall. In the past, Bailey won the Performer Award in the Leading Role category for her performance as Abby in The last of us part 2. Although some were critical of the character and acting, some even sending death threats to Bailey, many critics praised the acting and the performances of all actors involved.

The main games at this year’s BAFTAs have already received positive attention from other gaming awards shows. At The Game Awards 2021, It takes two won the award for best game, and Return caught the eye at this year’s DICE Awards for its audio design and music composition. Still, it will be interesting to see whether or not the BAFTAs follow this awards trend.

The 2022 BAFTA Gaming Awards will take place on April 7.
