East Lansing return game canceled after Everett’s forfeit, but rally continues

EAST LANSING – High school reunion and football go hand in hand, but due to an unexpected package, the East Lansing High School celebration will be a little different this weekend.

East Lansing’s return match was called off on Wednesday after opponent Lansing Everett High School said he would not be able to field a team due to injuries, suspensions and eligibility issues .

East Lansing searched statewide for a replacement opponent, but couldn’t find a replacement in such a short time, district officials said.

So, on Friday night, instead of the football game, East Lansing High School will host a community gathering to celebrate the school.

“We look forward to continuing our Homecoming celebrations as planned,” athletic director Nikki Norris said in an email.

The East Lansing Reunion Parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. as scheduled. East Lansing roads will be closed to accommodate the parade route. East Lansing Police will assist with temporary street closures and motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes.

The parade will start at ELHS and run from Old Hickory Lane south to Burcham Drive. From there, it will move towards avenue MAC in the direction of avenue Albert. From Albert Avenue the route will continue to Bailey Street before returning to Burcham Drive, Old Hickory Drive and returning to high school.

A community gathering will take place in the stadium immediately after the parade. The Marching Band and Elsingers will perform, and the Returning Tribunal members will be recognized.

The reunion ball will continue as planned from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 in the high school stadium. Parking will be at the south end of the student parking lot on the east side of the stadium.

“We look forward to celebrating Homecoming with our community, and thank you for your continued support to our East Lansing family,” said Norris.

The next game scheduled for East Lansing is Friday October 1 at Waverly High School.
