Listen! Do you feel something? Possibly a virtual reality game based on ghost hunters?
Some movie franchises lend themselves to video games. Others, not so much. It really comes down to this fundamental idea of walking inside the movie – which is why it makes perfect sense to turn some of these potential movies into not just video games, but virtual reality games.
For example, who wouldn’t want to try their hand at eliminating ghosts with their own proton packs, PKE counters and ghost traps? This is the experience that will be offered by the next Ghostbusters VR game that was announced today by Meta. The game is developed by nDreams and published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality. Ghost Corps, the division of Sony that overseas ghost hunters franchise, is also involved in the game.
The trailer shows off a game mechanic where multiple players — it can be played alone or with a team of up to four Ghostbusters, just like the teams in the movies — work together to explore a spooky factory and encounter ghosts. The logo is pretty smart too. Looked:
The announcement of Ghostbusters VR comes shortly after the announcement of a similar game for more traditional consoles called Ghostbusters: Spirits Freed, which also features cooperative gameplay with teams of buddies trying to bust ghosts. (This game comes from Illfonic, which has already adapted other movies like Friday 13 and Predator in cooperative console games.) Freed Spirits is due out before the end of 2022 but unfortunately, Ghostbusters VR the game doesn’t have a release date yet, so it’s potentially still a long way off.
