Highlights of Thailand Game Show 2022!

Thailand is known as a food and shopping paradise for visitors, but its reputation extends beyond that. In the hobbyist space, the nation has been a welcoming host to video game, anime, and comic book culture, with various events honoring enthusiasts over the year.

It’s a fitting celebration of geeky spirit, especially considering that the country’s capital, Bangkok, was the first in Southeast Asia to house a Gundam base. The city is also where local fans go every year to attend one of the most anticipated conventions: Thai Game Fair.

Although relatively young in a field that includes big names like the Tokyo Game Show, it has already established a strong presence in the region. 2019 turned out to be his last outing before the pandemic hit, so it only makes sense that organizers are looking to get back into the groove.

And his return certainly did not disappoint. Held in the largest hall of the Queen Sirikit National Conventional Centre, Thai Game Fair 2022 now features new areas, larger exhibition areas and more stalls to accommodate the returning crowd. The event kicked off with an exciting opening ceremony, which saw drumming performance, flag carrying action and original song and rap composition by well-known Thai singers, rappers and personalities.

A model of the Infinity Gauntlet was then shown on stage, with streamers invited to the Twitch booth then taking part in a Nintendo Switch tennis tournament. A few group photos later, and the convention officially began.

Much like the 2019 iteration, many cosplayers have made their rounds as characters in various anime and video game titles, the most prominent being Genshin Impact, Spy x Family, Chainsaw Manand Valorant. From intricate costumes to detailed weaponry, their presence certainly caught the attention of many attendees and brought the event space to life.

Game enthusiasts, like its predecessor, will continue to experience hands-on sessions in the game booths. JRPG fans, for example, can focus on Bandai Namco’s booth, Persona 5 Royal next to Sega space, or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. The HoYoverse stand, indicated by a Teleport Waypoint model, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet zone, are both extremely popular with visitors – note however that the latter does not have a game demo available, but instead offers a photo op with the adorable Pikachu mascots and themed headgear.

For those hungry for esports action, there will be live matches and exhibitions to check out. ROG Masters APAC tournament sees the best Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege local players compete on the big screen, while visitors to the Riot Games booth can enjoy Valorant stock. This year the indie genre also received more love, with a dedicated area showcasing smaller titles, student-led passion projects and more.

Joining the indie space as new additions are two areas for Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and the Metaverse, alongside three well-known food vendors: CP, Taokaenoi, and Koh-kae. Interestingly, Koh-kae’s booth offers a punch bag machine challenge, which visitors can participate in after meeting the minimum spend. Achieve the required strike force and they will walk away with more free gifts.

Thailand Game Show 2022 has so far proven to be a great return to form, offering a mix of beloved fresh and familiar elements. After two years of silence, it is nice to finally soak up the electric atmosphere again, in a place where like-minded individuals with shared interests gather. Onward to day two!

Thailand Game Show 2022 runs from October 21-23, with the retail day pass for 150 baht. Full pricing and event details can be found on the official website.
