More people infected during a Salmonella outbreak attributed to salami stick snacks

Health officials have confirmed that 10 more patients have been infected with Salmonella in an outbreak linked to the salami sticks, and nearly 60 tons of the product are now under recall.

The total number of patients stands at 31, according to a recall notice issued by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). That total is as of November 10 and is being reported as part of a joint investigation by FSIS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, the CDC has not updated its outbreak page since October 28 and still only shows 21 patients in eight states with six people hospitalized.

Information from FSIS shows the epidemic is continuing.

“FSIS worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state public health partners to investigate a multi-state outbreak of 31 Salmonella I 4,[5], 12: i: – diseases in 10 states with onset dates ranging from September 18, 2021 to October 18, 2021 ”, according to the FSIS recall notice.

The most recent information from the CDC indicates that the patient in the most recent outbreak fell ill on October 3 and lists patients as living in just eight states.

According to the CDC’s October 28 update, sick people range from 2 to 75 years old, with a median age of 12. Most sick people, 81%, are under 18. Of 18 people for whom information is available, six were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

“Of the 15 respondents, all said they ate salami sticks, and 14 said they ate or perhaps ate Citterio brand premium Italian-style salam sticks. Thirteen people bought Citterio premium Italian style salam sticks from Trader Joe’s, and one person bought them from Wegmans, ”according to the CDC. The agency also reports that the salami sticks may have been sold by other retailers.

On November 1, FSIS issued a public alert regarding the salami sticks, but “a recall was not requested because FSIS has not identified any specific contaminated lot or lots, and it is believed that the products potentially affected are no longer available for direct purchase. by retail consumers.

This belief changed when FSIS discovered that the product was available at at least one point of sale and that two samples of Citterio “salam” sticks previously collected by the California Department of Public Health tested positive for Salmonella. These samples were still in their original packaging.

With the new information, a recall of 59.5 tonnes of salami sticks has occurred. The recall, released by FSIS on Nov. 10, indicates concerns that some salami sticks may still be in consumer pantries or refrigerators. The agency urges consumers who have purchased these products not to consume them.

FSIS notes that the outbreak investigation is ongoing and asks consumers to use the following information to determine if they have the recalled salami snacks in their homes:

  • 2 oz. packages containing Citterio “ALL NATURAL Premium Italian Salam Sticks” with “best before” dates until January 23, 2022, located next to the barcode.

The recalled product also bears the establishment number “EST. 4010 “inside the USDA inspection mark on its packaging. The salami stick snacks were shipped to retail outlets nationwide and exported to Bermuda.

The salami sticks are a product of Euro Foods, a Freeland, PA company, which is the recalling entity. It manufactured the recalled products before October 25.
