Detroit Red Wings coach Derek “Newsy” Lalonde picked up a victory in his NHL debut as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Fittingly, it was a 3-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens in the season opener in Detroit.
It was appropriate because the previous time Newsy Lalonde coached an NHL game in Detroit, he also involved the Canadiens. Edouard “Newsy” Lalonde was behind the bench for the Canadiens on March 18, 1934 at Olympia Stadium. They beat the Red Wings 2-1. He is the Hockey Hall of Fame legend from whom Derek Lalonde gets his nickname.

Jack Adams was behind the Detroit bench that night. And if the new Newsy finds a way to lead the Red Wings to a playoff berth, he could be up for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year.
Rocky start for the Griffins
The Red Wings were going after the Canadians. However, the Grand Rapids Griffins were taking a beating at home. Detroit’s top farm club lost 6-2 to the San Diego Gulls in the AHL’s first game of the season at Van Andel Arena on Friday.

First, in his first professional game, forward Cross Hanas was -3, as was veteran D Brian Lashoff. Second, striker Givani Smith and defender Eemil Viro were at -2.
On a positive note, defender Simon Edvinsson was even, picking up an assist on Grand Rapids’ first goal.
