Seagate Horizon Forbidden West 5TB Game Drive

The all-new limited edition Forbidden West game discs for PS5/PS4 have been split into two different storage capacities, the 2TB model and the 5TB model. In our case, we’ll be looking at the 5TB model, which costs $189, $99. It’s currently out of stock on Amazon, but there are other retailers selling it. There are several product links that Seagate offers users who wish to purchase the product, which can be found on their website.

Seagate collaborated with Sony Interactive Entertainment and game development studio, Guerrilla, to create this limited edition Game Drive. This Game Drive is an officially licensed collectible product from Seagate and Sony designed for those who want to store games on a fashionable game drive. Seagate reports that the 2TB model can hold over 30 PS5 games or over 50 PS4 games, and on the 5TB model, over 60 PS5 games or over 100 PS4 games.

The Seagate Horizon Forbidden West officially licensed 2TB and 5TB Game Drive models both come with a one-year limited warranty.

Seagate Horizon Forbidden West 5TB Game Drive Build and Design

The Forbidden West game drive features a nice white color that matches the PS5 as well as a somewhat slim form factor that fits the 5TB storage. The most notable feature of this game drive is the top that features a unique art style showing off the main character of the game. The pop of colors and contrast really show off the cool design that Seagate decided to go with for this drive.

Since the Forbidden West Game Drive is a rotating external hard drive, it was not designed for GPU-heavy tasks or resource-intensive games. It’s not so bad for those who have a PS5 since this Game Drive is only intended for archiving games on next-gen consoles, however, for PS4 users it could be a problem. This Game Drive also features USB 3.2 Gen 1 connectivity and includes a USB 3.0 cable.

The Forbidden West game drive comes in at 4.51-inches x 3.07-inches x 0.809-inches, which is a good size, especially considering it’s 5TB of storage. The Game Drive also weighs 257g or 0.567lbs which is a good weight and gives peace of mind that this collectible won’t break.

Seagate Horizon Forbidden West 5TB Game Drive Setup

Going through the process of setting up and configuring the drive was made super easy with the PS5 doing all the formatting work and seeing that a new drive was recognized. To start the process of using external extended storage, it is necessary to go to the Storage page of PS5 or PS4 and click on the “Format as USB extended storage” button.

The process will then start formatting the disk, this part usually does not take too much time for users, only patience is required.

After the drive formatting is complete, in the Storage menu, the Game Drive will be recognized as a PS4 Game Drive. Drive size and remaining space for games and apps.

After the setup process is complete, the PS5 will display a small box reminding that PS5 games can only be transferred to and from and games cannot be played from the external hard drive.

Finally, we just wanted to show what it looks like when games are moved. There’s really nothing special about copying games and it’s just the default screen for those familiar with the PS5 mobile screen.

Seagate Horizon Forbidden West 5TB Game Drive Performance

As for the drive test, one of the first tests performed was the Blackmagic disk speed test. The Forbidden West 5TB drive managed to get 122MB/s read and 117MB/s write. This drive did not perform as well as we would like with other better performing external drives, however, it is able to do what it is intended for.

The next test is IOMeter, where we looked at 2MB of sequential reads and writes, 2MB of random reads and writes, and then 4K of random reads and writes. According to our results, the Forbidden West drive was a bit disappointing because this drive didn’t perform very well in this test. Starting out with 2MB of sequential reads and writes wasn’t the worst in the world, but after that the drive performance plummeted. Overall, being USB 3.0 based, this drive won’t win any awards, but again, it’s capable of doing what it was intended to do.

IOMeter
Test Results
2 MB sequential write 133.11 MB/s
2 MB sequential read 132.86 MB/s
2 MB random write 75.57 MB/s
2 MB random read 30.42 MB/s
4K random write 1,071IOps
4K shuffle 25.95IOps

Conclusion

The Seagate Horizon Forbidden West 5TB HDD Game Drive ticks most of the right boxes when it comes to an officially licensed external drive with cool aesthetic appeal. With its relatively small size of 5TB and the unique painted design of Aloy, the main protagonist, the Forbidden West Game Drive can fit perfectly into any PS5 setup.

When we reviewed the performance part of this drive, the Game Drive was good enough for the intended task. The Forbidden West drive was able to achieve 122MB/s read and 117MB/s write in the Blackmagic test. In the IOMeter test, we saw faster speeds than the Blackmagic test in the 2MB sequential with 132MB/s read and 133MB/s write. Once we ran the 2MB and 4K random tests, Game Drive performance dipped and didn’t start out on a good note.

Overall, however, this player isn’t really about the performance it brings to the table, it’s about the appeal of the limited edition as well as the portability. Game space is something everyone needs especially as games are getting bigger and bigger and this Game Drive allows users to store a variety of games as well as display painted design unique to Aloy.
