Creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk teases that Netflix’s upcoming Squid Game Season 2 could see Season 1 star HoYeon Jung return to play Kang Sae-byeok’s twin.
squid game creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk hints that a dead character can return in Season 2 as a twin. Netflix’s biggest hit of 2021 came from South Korea and centers on a tournament where participants risk their lives to win big money. The majority of the main cast ultimately died at the end, but a fan-favorite player might be back thanks to a creative workaround.
Inspired by South Korea’s penchant for game shows, squid game started with 456 players vying for the prize. They play what initially seemed like harmless traditional children’s games, but each had a deadly twist. After six deadly matches, not to mention the ever looming danger of his teammates, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) has been crowned the winner of the latest incarnation of squid gamethe horrible secret competition. But fans also invested in other characters, especially HoYeon Jung’s Kang Sae-byeok, who was among the last player kills in the game.
Talk with Deadline during Saturday’s PGA Awards ceremony, Hwang was asked about updates regarding squid game season 2, which has been officially announced by Netflix, much to the delight of fans. The writer/director remains silent on spoilers and says the sequel is unlikely to feature any of the dead players. However, he also teases that he might bring Jung back to play Sae-byeok’s twin. Jung, who won awards for her performance and was with Hwang on the red carpet, laughed it off, suggesting she might change her appearance to come back. Read their responses below:
Hwang: No, because most of them are dead. I’ll try something to bring them back to season 2. Let’s say she maybe has a twin sister, you’ll see.
Jung: I could change the color of my hair. Let’s do a bit like plastic surgery.
It’s unclear if Hwang is really serious about his comments, but considering Jung’s popularity, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. May be squid game season 2 may offer new information about Sae-byeok through flashbacks. It would be a great way to creatively incorporate the character back into the South Korean series without jeopardizing his death. Otherwise, the twin route could also be an interesting way to introduce Jung again. For what it’s worth, it’s safe to say fans wouldn’t care, given how popular her performance was.
Not much is known about its season 2, but the squid game The Season 1 finale set up a clear narrative path for its follow-up. Gi-hun is expected to prey on the VIPs and everyone who organizes the deadly underground competition. Hwang said that there will be new games in the second year of the series, which means there will be another series of games with new competitors. But it wouldn’t hurt to see some of the old characters again.
