Movies often contain little nods to other forms of media: books, other movies, real events, even games. Known as intertextual references to moviegoers, most people just call them easter eggs. Well, since Keanu Reeves has become more involved with video games – despite not being a gamer himself – The Matrix Resurrections contains an Easter egg that hints at the main actor’s appearances at The Game. Awards. Very light detail for The Matrix to follow.

There is a moment in the film where we see a 1999 Game Awards trophy, awarded to The Matrix, developed by Deus Machina. In the movie, Neo is a game developer who worked on a game called, you guessed it, The Matrix.

Keanu Reeves is no stranger to video games. He played dead rockstar Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077 and thinks it’s “good” that everyone wants to mess with the character. He has also appeared several times at the actual Video Game Awards, once in 2020 and virtually in 2021 to showcase the Unreal Engine 5 Matrix experience.

The Matrix Resurrections is out now and has film critics completely divided – meaning you’ll have to see it for yourself to find out if it’s any good or not. If you want to see more intertextuality, look no further than Fortnite, which features everything from Ariana Grande to Spider-Man. There are now Matrix emotes and weapon wraps in-game: Neo’s iconic slow-mo backspin and Trinity’s time-stopping flying kick.

Despite this, Keanu Reeves has publicly stated that he wouldn’t like to see Neo, or his other famous action role, John Wick, appear in Mortal Kombat. He said, “Mortal Kombat is great in a lot of ways, but I think…you know, Neo, John Wick, they do their own thing. Mortal Kombat do their own thing.”
