Tyson Foods Inc. recalls ready-to-eat chicken products due to possible Listeria contamination


WASHINGTON, July 3, 2021 – Tyson Foods Inc., a Dexter, Mo. facility, is recalling approximately 8,492,832 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Frozen and fully cooked chicken products were produced between December 26, 2020 and April 13, 2021. The recalled products are listed here. See the labels here.

The recalled products carry the establishment number “EST. P-7089 “on the product bag or inside the USDA inspection mark. These items have been shipped nationwide to retailers and institutions including hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants, schools and Ministry of Defense sites.

On June 9, 2021, FSIS was notified of two people with listeriosis. Working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health partners, FSIS has determined that there is evidence linking the Listeria monocytogenes diseases of precooked chicken produced at Tyson Foods Inc. The epidemiological investigation identified three diseases of listeriosis, including one death, between April 6, 2021 and June 5, 2021. During routine sample collection, FSIS has collected two samples of precooked chicken from two establishments that are closely related genetically to Listeria monocytogenes sick people. One of the samples was collected from Tyson Foods Inc. FSIS continues to work with federal and state public health partners to determine if there are other illnesses associated with these products.

Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that mainly affects the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, as well as pregnant women and their newborns. Less frequently, people outside of these risk groups are affected.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature labor, or a life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. People in high risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming contaminated food should see a doctor and notify the health care provider of the consumption of contaminated food.

FSIS is concerned that some products may be found in consumer and institutional freezers. Consumers should not eat these products. Institutions should not serve these products. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS regularly performs recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling companies are notifying their customers of the recall and that action is taken to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers.
