Union Pines tennis improves to 3-0 | Archives

Union Pines claimed another victory on the courts on Wednesday night, improving to 3-0 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Harnett Central.

The Vikings are now 3-0 this season ahead of a double title at Lee County on June 1. The Vikings remain tied for the top of the Tri-County Conference standings with Triton, who is 4-0 in the TCC game but does not play Union Pins until the second week of June.

For the second game in a row, the Vikings missed a clean sweep only because of a tiebreaker loss. This time it happened at No.4 in singles, where the Trojans got their only point when Emme Ann Thompson crushed Eleanor Slyman 9-8 (10-8). There were only two other close matches, one in singles and one in doubles. In the No. 6 singles, McKayla Kirk of Union Pines beat Syniah Miller, 9-7. The No.1 double was also very close, with Lily Slyman and Tyne Ross beating Brittany Mills and Thompson by the same score.

In other singles matches, River Britt (1) defeated Mills 8-1; Lily Slyman (2) took down Malaya McFadyen 8-5; Ross (3) defeated Anna Vreeling 8-1; and Becca Cameron (5) shutout Morgan Jones 8-0.

In the other two doubles matches, Britt and Abby Robertson (2) beat McFadyen and Vreeling 8-2, and Eleanor Slyman and Cameron beat Miller and Sophie McLean by the same score.

Eleanor Slyman won her 80th career game and Lily Slyman won her first in the game.
