USAAF Mustang is the newest addition to the arcade archives

Shocks away

Hope you haven’t had enough of the shmups from the Golden Age yet, because retro lovers at Hamster still have about a billion more to offer. This week sees the return of Taito’s alternative World War shooter USAAF Mustang, which is now available for download on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, priced at around $ 8.

Originally hit the arcade scene in 1990, (before making the jump to Sega Genesis as Fire mustang), USAAF Mustang sees a North American pilot battling both the Luftwaffe and the Imperial Japanese Air Service in an intense and overwhelming shot of WWII. Players travel through various European territories, detonating waves of enemies and particularly brutal boss fights. Strangely enough, unlike many such examples, USAAF Mustang does not feature alternative weapons, although bonuses can be collected in order to increase the spread of the Mustang’s firepower.

Although this arcade classic is a bit shallow, but features fast-paced action and polished visuals, still pleasing to the modern eye. Ultimately, however, there are plenty of similar shmups available and, aside from its intriguing premise, USAAF Mustang is enough by the numbers.
